Harbor Hill, the Mackay estate.
Wikipedia says Clarence and Katherine Mackay settled here in 1898 and had Stanford White design their mansion, Harbor Hill; the Harbor Hill Moraine is named for the hill, one of the highest points in Nassau County. The village incorporated on June 24, 1931, partly so residents wouldn't pay for public improvements like sanitary sewers or be part of the Roslyn Sewer District. Postwar developments followed, including Levitt & Sons' Strathmore. It covers 2.3 square miles, all land.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 2,200 homes, with a median year built of 1956. 37% went up in the 1950s, 8% before 1940, and 15% after 1980. 100% are single-family detached houses, and 100% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 70 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Oil to gas means new gas piping.
The ACS shows 72% of homes heat with utility gas and 24% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Cesspools and septic, mostly.
Nassau County's health department list of sewer collection districts shows East Hills as not publicly sewered, and Wikipedia says the overwhelming majority of the village relies on cesspools and septic systems (a few properties tie into the county's East Hills Interceptor). We clear the line from the house, but a full or failing cesspool is a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work, and we don't install septic systems.
Little mapped flood risk.
FEMA's current flood map puts none of East Hills in the high-risk flood zone.
Water: Roslyn Water District.
EPA's service-area map puts essentially all residents on the Roslyn Water District; your bill is the final word. The main supplier's most recent 90th-percentile lead result was 0 ppb (none measured), under the 15 ppb action level; lead usually comes from a home's own pipes and fixtures, so results vary house to house. In EPA's UCMR 5 testing, the main supplier's highest single PFOA/PFOS result was 5.6 parts per trillion. EPA's 4 ppt limits apply as a running annual average starting in 2029, so one high sample is not a violation, but it's the kind of number a carbon filter is sized against. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
East Hills is an incorporated village, so plumbing permits go through the Village of East Hills' building department, not the town.
