Local to West Babylon
Based on Merrick Road, serving West Babylon
West Babylon is one of the closest Suffolk hamlets to our office, about 10 minutes away without traffic. It's also a place where the first question on a drain call is "sewer or cesspool?" The treatment plant for Suffolk County's largest sewer district sits in West Babylon, but not every West Babylon street drains to it.

1950s and 1960s houses, still mostly on oil.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 14,300 homes in West Babylon. 31% were built in the 1950s and 25% in the 1960s, with a median year built of 1961. 76% are single-family detached and 76% are owner-occupied. The heating numbers stand out. 45% of homes heat with fuel oil and 40% with utility gas, so oil-to-gas switches, and the gas piping they need, are a steady part of the work here. We run the gas lines. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Sewer or cesspool? Depends on your street.
The Bergen Point Wastewater Treatment Plant, which treats sewage for Suffolk County Sewer District No. 3 (Southwest), is in West Babylon. It opened in 1981. The district covers parts of the Towns of Babylon and Islip, but West Babylon was one of five communities in the county's 2012 study of areas that still lacked sewers. The county's 2026–2028 proposed capital program includes the Carlls River 107-1 project, which would sewer a triangle of West Babylon along the Southern State Parkway between Straight Path and Lakeway Drive.
If you're on a cesspool, a backup can be a clogged line or a full system. Suffolk County says about 250,000 of its cesspools pre-date its 1973 rule requiring septic tanks on new construction. Since July 1, 2019, a failed cesspool can't be replaced with another cesspool. A conventional septic system is now the minimum. We clear the house drain so you know whether it's the line or the cesspool itself. A full or failing cesspool is a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work.
Water from the Suffolk County Water Authority.
West Babylon homes are on SCWA water. SCWA says groundwater here is naturally acidic (pH 4.5 to 6.8), so it adds hydrated lime to protect household plumbing from corrosion. In 2026 SCWA replaced about 2,400 feet of aging iron main on Cabot Road, a line it said had broken many times. For a leak in the street or at the curb, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
The south end floods.
West Babylon reaches the Great South Bay, and the peninsula at its southwest corner is Venetian Shores. In Superstorm Sandy, the National Weather Service reported that most of the area south of Montauk Highway from Amityville to Islip was completely inundated. Smaller storms still push water up the canals: about a foot on canal-front properties and roads in West Babylon in January 2016. Check water heaters, gas appliances and low cleanouts after any surge. If your street is sewered, a backwater (sewer check) valve on the house line can keep a sewer backup from coming in through low drains. We install them.
Permits.
West Babylon is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Babylon's Division of Building. Under town code, plumbing, drainage and gas piping work must be done by a master plumber licensed by the Town of Babylon Plumbers Examining Board. Gas permits are issued only to those licensed plumbers.
Local reference points: the Bergen Point plant on the bay, Venetian Shores, Sawyer Avenue Park, and Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway running east–west through the hamlet.

Questions
West Babylon plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of West Babylon?
Yes, all of 11704, plus Venetian Shores (Lindenhurst 11757 addresses) and neighboring North Babylon, Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst.
How do I know if I'm on sewer or a cesspool?
Check your tax bill for a sewer district charge, or ask the Suffolk County Department of Public Works.
My drains back up and I'm on a cesspool. Can you help?
We can clear the house's main drain. If it's clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool itself is likely full or failing, and you'll need a cesspool or septic contractor. Under Suffolk rules since 2019, a failed cesspool must be replaced with at least a septic system. We don't do cesspool work or install septic systems.
My house was built in the early 1960s. What should I check?
The main drain and the original supply piping. If several fixtures drain slowly or the main backs up, have it cleared before it fails.
Who do I call for a leak at the street?
The Suffolk County Water Authority, (631) 698-9500, for anything on its side of the meter. Call us for anything on your side.
When can I reach you in West Babylon?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
