East Northport is a hamlet of post-war single-family houses, most built in the 1950s and 1960s, with no public sewer: on the county's map, none of it is in a sewer district, so homes run to cesspools or septic systems. 44% still heat with oil. From our Massapequa office it's about 33 minutes away without traffic.

Larkfield, Clay Pitts and a railroad name.
Wikipedia's history says two settlements grew here: Larkfield on the north side, near Vernon Valley and Genola Cemetery, and Clay Pitts on the south side, named for red clay that Native Americans used for pottery and Europeans used for bricks. Farms between them supplied New York City and Brooklyn. In 1873 the Long Island Rail Road opened a new "Northport" station at Larkfield Road and Bellerose Avenue; conductors called it "East of Northport," the name stuck, and the Larkfield post office became East Northport in 1910. After World War II a housing boom turned the farms into suburbs. Today East Northport is the largest community in the Town of Huntington by land area, 5.2 square miles, and third by population.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 7,600 homes, with a median year built of 1959. 34% went up in the 1950s, 26% in the 1960s and 10% in the 1970s; 12% are older than 1940, and 10% were built after 1980. 91% are single-family detached houses, and 89% are owner-occupied.
So most houses are 50 to 75 years old: around the age when original water heaters, fixture valves, galvanized supply pipe and cast-iron or clay main drains start to fail. Several slow drains at once, low pressure, or rusty water from one tap are the signs to have it checked.
Oil heat, and the gas lines that replace it.
The ACS shows 49% of East Northport homes heat with utility gas and 44% with fuel oil. Every oil-to-gas switch needs a new gas line to the heating equipment, and it's the natural time to move the water heater, range and dryer to gas too. We do the gas line work and the gas water heater. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Cesspools and septic, not sewers.
Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary, none of the East Northport CDP falls inside an active or proposed sewer district; the nearest, the Village of Northport's, is outside it. That means homes here drain to cesspools or septic systems. When every drain in the house slows at once, it can be roots or a break in the line, or a cesspool that no longer takes water. We clear the line before anyone talks about digging. If it's the cesspool itself, you'll need a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work. Since July 1, 2019, Suffolk County hasn't allowed a failed cesspool to be replaced with another cesspool.
Water: Suffolk County Water Authority, mostly.
SCWA's distribution index puts East Northport, south of Middleville Road and west to the Greenlawn Water District boundary near Elwood Road, in its Distribution Area 10; houses near that line may be on the Greenlawn Water District instead (check your bill). SCWA's 2026 report on 2025 water shows Area 10 total hardness of 40.5 to 113.5 mg/L, averaging 72.7, which is moderately hard by the USGS scale, so scale on fixtures and in water heaters is more common here than with the very soft South Shore supplies. Nitrate averaged 6.56 mg/L across 227 tests (high 8.39, limit 10); SCWA lists fertilizer and septic systems among the sources. 1,4-dioxane averaged 0.46 micrograms per liter, with a high reading of 1.65; compliance with New York's 1.0 limit is judged on a running average, and the report shows no violation. PFOS reached 7 and PFOA 3 parts per trillion, under the 10 limit. Iron was low. If you want a filter, we'll size it to those numbers. For a leak at the street, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500.
Permits and licensing: Town of Huntington.
East Northport is an unincorporated hamlet. The town plumbing code requires a Town of Huntington permit to install, repair or modify plumbing or gas piping, and a plumbing license issued by the town to do the work. Owners of one- and two-family homes may do their own plumbing, but not gas piping.

Questions
East Northport plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of East Northport?
Yes, all of it (11731, and the parts with a Northport 11768 address), including Larkfield and Vernon Valley, plus neighboring Northport, Commack, Elwood, Greenlawn and Centerport.
Is my house on a sewer or a cesspool?
Almost certainly a cesspool or septic system: the county's map shows no sewer district in the hamlet.
My drains back up and I'm on a cesspool. Can you help?
We can clear the house's main drain. If it's clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool itself is likely full or failing, and that's a job for a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't do cesspool work or install septic systems.
Why is there white crust on my faucets and showerhead?
Likely hardness scale. SCWA's Area 10 water averaged about 73 mg/L of hardness in 2025; Liberty's Merrick water on the South Shore stays under 20. Scale also builds up in water heaters; flushing the tank or adding treatment can help.
We're switching from oil to gas. What plumbing work is involved?
A gas line from the meter to the new heating equipment, sized for anything else you want on gas: water heater, range, dryer. It needs a Town of Huntington permit. We do the gas piping; we don't sell or deliver oil.
When can I reach you in East Northport?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
