"The Heart of Huntington," once Northern Dix Hills.
Wikipedia says Elwood was originally known as Northern Dix Hills; a post office opened there under the name Elwood on June 7, 1870 and closed for good on October 31, 1902. Where the name came from is uncertain; one theory credits an early settler named Elkanah Wood. Its main roads include Jericho Turnpike, Burr Road, Clay Pitts Road, Cuba Hill Road and Elwood Road.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 4,000 homes, with a median year built of 1964. 30% went up in the 1950s, 2% before 1940, and 19% after 1980. 89% are single-family detached houses, and 95% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 62 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Oil to gas means new gas piping.
The ACS shows 56% of homes heat with utility gas and 37% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Cesspools and septic, mostly.
Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary shows none of the hamlet in a county sewer district, so most homes rely on cesspools or septic systems. We clear the line from the house to the system, but a full or failing cesspool is a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work, and we don't install septic systems.
Little mapped flood risk.
FEMA's current flood map puts none of Elwood in the high-risk flood zone.
Water: Greenlawn Water District.
EPA's service-area map puts about 85% of residents, with about 15% on the Suffolk County Water Authority on the Greenlawn Water District; your bill is the final word. In EPA's UCMR 5 testing, the main supplier reported no PFOA or PFOS. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
Elwood is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Huntington.

Do you cover all of Elwood?
Yes, all of Elwood (ZIP 11731, 11740, 11743), plus the neighboring communities listed below.
Is Elwood on a sewer or a cesspool?
Most homes here use a cesspool or septic system; a sewer district charge on your tax bill means you're connected. We clear the house drain line, but cesspool pumping or replacement is for a cesspool or septic contractor.

Can you handle the gas piping when I switch from oil to gas?
Yes, we install and repair gas lines for heating equipment and appliances.
When can I reach you in Elwood?
