Foster's Meadow, then the racetrack.

The area was known as Foster's Meadow for about two centuries after Christopher and Thomas Foster bought land here in 1650, and was renamed Elmont in 1882, according to Wikipedia's hamlet history. Belmont Park opened in 1905. The farms around it were sold and split into house lots, many bought by people who worked at the track. After World War II, Elmont filled in with tract homes, many of them Cape Cods with a brick-veneer ground floor, especially around Dutch Broadway. Older, smaller shingled houses cluster near Belmont Park along Hempstead Turnpike.

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 10,400 homes. 25% were built in the 1940s and 29% in the 1950s, and 18% are older than 1940. The median year built is 1952, and only 11% went up after 1980. 79% are single-family detached and 11% are two-family homes. 79% are owner-occupied.

A 1940s or 1950s cape may have been expanded since: a dormer bath upstairs, a finished basement, sometimes a second unit. That puts more fixtures on a main drain that may be original. When more than one fixture drains slowly, we clear the main before anyone talks about digging.

Mostly gas.

The ACS shows 65% of Elmont homes heat with utility gas and 23% with fuel oil. Gas water heaters, ranges and dryers are the norm, and the remaining oil homes are candidates for conversion. We install and repair the gas piping. We don't sell or deliver oil.

Your water: the Water Authority of Western Nassau County, or Franklin Square.

Most of Elmont is served by the Water Authority of Western Nassau County (WAWNC), which counts about 8,900 meters in Elmont, more than in any other community it serves. A part of Elmont is in the Franklin Square Water District instead. WAWNC's 2025 report says its 24 wells draw from the Upper Glacial, Magothy and Lloyd aquifers. It adds caustic soda to raise the pH to about 7.5 and zinc orthophosphate to coat mains, service lines and household plumbing and cut corrosion. It runs air strippers, iron removal plants and carbon filters at some sites. In 2025 the Authority finished rehabilitating its elevated storage tank in Elmont, added an emergency generator at Station 44 in Elmont, and finalized design of a new building to enclose carbon (GAC) treatment vessels at Station 28 in Elmont. It also replaced 356 lead service lines across its system that year. If you want to know whether your service line is lead, WAWNC's inventory is on its website.

Sewer, not cesspool.

Elmont is on Nassau County's public sewer system. A backup is usually your house line to the street.

Permits.

Elmont has tried to incorporate as a village several times (1931, 1940 and 1949) without success, so it remains an unincorporated hamlet. Plumbing and gas permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department.

Questions

Elmont plumbing FAQ

Do you cover all of Elmont?
Yes, all of ZIP 11003, including Alden Manor and Locustwood, plus neighboring North Valley Stream, Franklin Square, Floral Park and Valley Stream.
Who supplies my water, the Water Authority or Franklin Square?
Most of Elmont is on the Water Authority of Western Nassau County. Part of Elmont is in the Franklin Square Water District. Your water bill shows which. It matters if there's a leak at the curb or you want your supplier's water report.
I have a two-family house. Can one clog back up both units?
Yes, if both units share the main drain. If the lower unit backs up when the upper unit runs water, the main is likely partly blocked. We clear it.
My ceiling is wet under the upstairs bathroom. What do I do?
Stop using that bathroom and shut its water off if you can. The cause is often a failed tub or shower drain, wax ring or supply line. We find the leak first so only a small section of ceiling gets opened.
There's water bubbling up at the curb. Who do I call?
Your water supplier for anything on its side of the meter. For the Water Authority of Western Nassau County, call (516) 327-4100. For the Franklin Square Water District, call the district. For your side of the meter or inside the house, call us.
When can I reach you in Elmont?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
