Springs, a high water table and the King's Highway.

Wikipedia says the first house in greater Hauppauge dates to 1731, that the Wheeler family settled here before 1753 (the area carried their name until the 1860s), and that the Hauppauge Methodist Church still standing was built in 1812 on Wheeler land. It notes Hauppauge is known for underground springs and a high water table, and the Nissequogue River runs through it. Many Suffolk County government offices are here. The CDP covers 10.8 square miles in the Towns of Islip and Smithtown.

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 7,300 homes, with a median year built of 1969. 12% went up in the 1950s, 1% before 1940, and 25% after 1980. 77% are single-family detached houses, 13% are in buildings of five or more units, and 85% are owner-occupied.

So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 57 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.

Oil to gas means new gas piping.

The ACS shows 57% of homes heat with utility gas and 32% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.

Cesspools and septic, mostly.

Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary puts only small pieces of Hauppauge in a county sewer district: the Hauppauge Industrial Sewer District (about 18%) and the Hauppauge Municipal Sewer District (about 5%) and the Wind Watch Sewer District (about 3%), roughly 26% of the area in all. Most homes rely on cesspools or septic systems. We clear the line from the house to the system, but a full or failing cesspool is a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work, and we don't install septic systems.

Little mapped flood risk.

FEMA's current flood map puts none of Hauppauge in the high-risk flood zone.

Water: Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA).

EPA's service-area map puts essentially all residents on the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA); your bill is the final word. In EPA's UCMR 5 testing, the main supplier's highest single PFOA/PFOS result was 17 parts per trillion. EPA's 4 ppt limits apply as a running annual average starting in 2029, so one high sample is not a violation, but it's the kind of number a carbon filter is sized against. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier (SCWA: (631) 698-9500). For anything on your side of the meter, call us.

Permits.

Hauppauge is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the the Town of Islip or the Town of Smithtown, depending on which side of the town line you live on.

Local reference points: the Hauppauge Industrial Park, Motor Parkway and the Nissequogue River.

Hauppauge plumbing FAQ

Do you cover all of Hauppauge?
Yes, all of Hauppauge (ZIP 11787, 11788), plus the neighboring communities listed below.
Is Hauppauge on a sewer or a cesspool?
Most homes here use a cesspool or septic system; a sewer district charge on your tax bill means you're connected. We clear the house drain line, but cesspool pumping or replacement is for a cesspool or septic contractor.

Can you handle the gas piping when I switch from oil to gas?
Yes, we install and repair gas lines for heating equipment and appliances.
When can I reach you in Hauppauge?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
