Local to Brentwood
Based on Merrick Road, serving Brentwood
Brentwood is the biggest hamlet on Long Island. It had 62,387 people in the 2020 Census, the most of any Census-designated place in Suffolk County or on the Island outside New York City. That's a lot of homes running a lot of water through drains that, on many streets, end in a cesspool rather than a sewer. From our Massapequa office it's about 25 minutes away without traffic.

Big households, 1950s–60s houses.
The 2020 Census counted 62,387 residents in 13,658 households in Brentwood, more than four people per household on average. More people means more showers, more laundry and more load on the drain line, the water heater and, on many streets, the cesspool.
The Census Bureau has suppressed its newer American Community Survey data for Brentwood after finding a 2020 data-collection problem (ACS Errata 148). So these housing figures come from the 2015–2019 survey, the last release without that data. It counted about 14,800 homes. 79% were single-family detached and 9% two-family, and 76% were owner-occupied. 24% were built in the 1950s and 34% in the 1960s, with a median year built of 1964. About 70% went up before 1970. 51% heated with utility gas and 41% with fuel oil, so oil-to-gas conversions, and the gas piping they need, are common work here. We run gas lines. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Mostly cesspools; sewers are planned only for downtown.
Suffolk County's 2023 resolution funding Brentwood sewer design says the area "could benefit from the availability of sanitary sewer service." The county's project (CP 8112) targets the commercial area around the Brentwood LIRR station, Suffolk Avenue, Brentwood Road and Fifth Avenue. Its implementation plan estimates $74.9 million and completion in February 2029. Most Brentwood houses will still drain to a cesspool or septic system after that.
That matters when drains back up. Suffolk County says about 250,000 cesspools pre-date its 1973 rule requiring septic tanks on new construction. With 70% of Brentwood homes built before 1970, many still have original systems. Since July 1, 2019, a failed cesspool can't be replaced with another cesspool. A conventional septic system is the minimum. We clear the house drain so you know whether it's a line problem or the cesspool itself. Pumping, repairing or replacing a cesspool is a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work.
Water from the Suffolk County Water Authority.
Brentwood is on SCWA water and is split between two of its distribution areas. Your annual report lists one or the other depending on your street. SCWA says the groundwater it pumps is naturally acidic (pH 4.5–6.8), so it adds hydrated lime to protect home plumbing. SCWA has Brentwood wells under treatment. As of June 2026, a new carbon (GAC) system at Carrol Street Well #2 was being prepared for loading, and Third Avenue Well #3A was running on GAC and blended with Well #4 while an advanced oxidation system is prepared there. SCWA's policy is that a well that exceeds a standard without treatment is taken out of service. For a leak at the street, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500.
Permits and licensing: Town of Islip.
Brentwood is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits come from the Town of Islip Building Division. Islip's plumbing code says only plumbers licensed by the Islip Town Plumbers' Examining Board may do plumbing or run a plumbing business in the town. A December 2025 amendment requires a company to have an Islip-licensed master plumber with a controlling interest or as its responsible managing officer.

Questions
Brentwood plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of Brentwood and Edgewood?
Yes, all of ZIP 11717, including the Edgewood area, plus neighboring North Bay Shore, Central Islip and Bay Shore.
My drains back up and I'm on a cesspool. What now?
We can clear the house's main drain. If it's clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool itself is likely full or failing, and that's a job for a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't do cesspool work or install septic systems.
Is Brentwood getting sewers?
Only part of it, for now. Suffolk County's sewer project targets the commercial area around the LIRR station, Suffolk Avenue, Brentwood Road and Fifth Avenue, with completion projected for 2029. Most homes will stay on cesspools or septic systems. If your property is in a sewer area, we do sewer hookups from the house to the street connection.
We have a big household. Is our water heater too small?
Possibly. If you run out of hot water every morning, the tank may be too small for your household, or sediment may have cut its capacity. We'll check it and size a replacement to how many people actually use it.
Who do I call for a leak at the street?
SCWA at (631) 698-9500 for anything on its side of the meter. Call us for your side.
When can I reach you in Brentwood?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
