A Quaker settlement of 1648.
Wikipedia says Jericho was part of the Robert Williams Plantation in 1648 and that its English settlers were or became Quakers. The hamlet's post office, school districts (Jericho and Syosset) and Census boundaries all differ, and the Westbury Music Fair, despite its Westbury address, is in Jericho.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 4,400 homes, with a median year built of 1960. 44% went up in the 1950s, 3% before 1940, and 28% after 1980. 67% are single-family detached houses, 15% are in buildings of five or more units, and 80% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 66 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Oil to gas means new gas piping.
The ACS shows 55% of homes heat with utility gas and 25% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
On the sewer.
Nassau County's health department lists Jericho's sewers under the Nassau County Department of Public Works (516-571-6841). A backup that stops at your house is usually in your own line to the street; we clear it and repair or replace the line. If neighbors are backed up too, call the county at 516-571-6841.
Little mapped flood risk.
FEMA's current flood map puts none of Jericho in the high-risk flood zone. A backwater (sewer check) valve is still worth considering for a finished basement on a sewered street: it closes if the street sewer backs up. We install them.
Water: Jericho Water District.
EPA's service-area map puts about 91% of residents, with about 9% on the Hicksville Water District on the Jericho Water District; your bill is the final word. Jericho Water District's 2025 report (May 2026) describes soft water (total hardness 5.9 to 55.4 mg/L) with pH readings from 5.3 to 7.1, below the county health department's 7.5 to 8.5 guideline, and a contract awarded in December 2025 to replace all of the district's lead service lines, including goosenecks, by spring 2027; its inventory counts 2 lead lines out of 19,246. Low-pH soft water is hard on copper, so pinhole leaks in old copper lines are worth watching for. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
Jericho is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Planning and Development.
