Plainview went from farm hamlet to suburb in a single decade, and almost two-thirds of its houses were built in the 1950s. That makes the original plumbing in most homes about 65 to 75 years old. From our Massapequa office, also in the Town of Oyster Bay, it's about 18 minutes away without traffic.

Manetto Hill to Plainview, then a boom.
Wikipedia's history says the area was settled as Manetto Hill and took the name Plainview in 1885, for the view of the Hempstead Plains from the Manetto Hills. It stayed a farming community, known for cucumbers grown for the Heinz pickle works and later potatoes, until after World War II. Between 1950 and 1960 the hamlet grew from 1,155 people to more than 35,000.
The Census numbers match that story. The Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 9,100 homes, with a median year built of 1957. 64% were built in the 1950s and 15% in the 1960s. Only 1% are older than 1940. 92% are single-family detached and 93% are owner-occupied.
In a house built in one wave like this, the problems tend to show up in waves too: original cast-iron drain and waste lines, galvanized or early copper supply piping, and main lines out to the street that are as old as the house. We check what you actually have before recommending any replacement.
Oil is still common.
The ACS shows 60% of Plainview homes heat with utility gas and 32% with fuel oil. Switching to gas means new gas piping to the equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Sewer, not cesspool.
The Nassau County Department of Health lists Plainview as publicly sewered, with Nassau County Public Works as the sewer authority (516-571-6841). A backup that stops at your house is usually your own line to the street; we clear it. If the street is backed up, call the county.
Your water: Plainview Water District.
The district has served Plainview and Old Bethpage since 1928. Its 2025 report (May 2026) says it pumped 1.75 billion gallons for about 34,000 people from 12 wells in the Magothy aquifer. It adds lime to cut corrosion of mains and household plumbing, treats wells with air stripping and carbon filters for volatile organic compounds and PFAS, and had eight Advanced Oxidation Process systems running to remove 1,4-dioxane, plus ion exchange for nitrate and perchlorate at Plant No. 4. Nitrate ran 0.66 to 8.4 mg/L, under the 10 mg/L limit, and the report carries the state's mandatory advisory for elevated nitrate. Total hardness ran from 10 to 180 mg/L depending on the well. The district says it has found no customer-owned lead service lines. A $29 million treatment upgrade at Plant 5 on Haypath Road, the district's largest well site, broke ground in November 2025.
Hard winters break pipes.
The district's spring 2026 newsletter says the record cold of winter 2025–26 caused nearly 60 water main breaks across the district. The same freeze-thaw that cracks mains can split exposed pipes in garages, crawl spaces and outside walls. If a pipe bursts, shut the main valve and call us. The district also reminds residents that backflow devices (for example on lawn sprinkler lines) must be tested every year, with forms due December 31, 2026. District office: 10 Manetto Hill Road, (516) 931-6469.
Permits and licensing: Town of Oyster Bay.
Plainview is an unincorporated hamlet, so permits go through the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Planning and Development. Town code makes it unlawful to install, repair, alter or modify plumbing in the town, or to run a plumbing business, without a master plumber's license issued or recognized by the town, and licensees must carry at least $1 million in liability insurance. The town's Plumbers' Examining Board (516-624-6217) says residents can call to check whether a plumber is licensed.

Questions
Plainview plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of Plainview?
Yes, all of ZIP 11803, plus neighboring Old Bethpage, Bethpage, Hicksville, Syosset and Woodbury.
My house was built in the 1950s. What usually fails first?
Most often the original cast-iron drain lines and the main line to the street, then old supply piping and shutoff valves. Slow drains in several fixtures, or a main that backs up after heavy use, are the signs to have it cleared.
A pipe froze or burst. What do I do?
Shut the main water valve, usually where the service enters the house, then call us at (631) 644-2084. For a leak at the street or meter, call the Plainview Water District at (516) 931-6469.
Is Plainview on a sewer or a cesspool?
The county health department lists Plainview as publicly sewered. If only your house backs up, call us; if the street is backed up, call Nassau County Public Works at 516-571-6841.
Do I need a licensed plumber in Plainview?
Yes. Town of Oyster Bay code requires a master plumber's license issued or recognized by the town for plumbing work. You can check a plumber with the town's Plumbers' Examining Board at 516-624-6217.
When can I reach you in Plainview?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
