A hamlet with someone else's mailing address.
Wikipedia says North Wantagh has no post office of its own, so homes here carry a "Wantagh, NY 11793" or "Seaford, NY 11783" address, which blurs where its borders are; its public schools are Levittown's. The Southern State Parkway, Wantagh Parkway and Seaford–Oyster Bay Expressway all have exits here, Wantagh Avenue is the main commercial street, and the Town of Hempstead's Forest City Community Park sits near the North Bellmore line. The CDP covers 1.9 square miles.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 4,300 homes, with a median year built of 1956. 70% went up in the 1950s, 3% before 1940, and 9% after 1980. 92% are single-family detached houses, and 95% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 70 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Oil to gas means new gas piping.
The ACS shows 33% of homes heat with utility gas and 58% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Sewer.
Nassau County's health department list of sewer collection districts doesn't name North Wantagh separately; Wantagh, Seaford and Levittown around it are all listed under the Nassau County Department of Public Works (516-571-6841). A sewer district charge on your tax bill means you're connected. A backup that stops at your house is usually in your own line to the street; we clear it and repair or replace the line. If neighbors are backed up too, call the county at 516-571-6841.
Little mapped flood risk.
FEMA's current flood map puts none of North Wantagh in the high-risk flood zone. A backwater (sewer check) valve is still worth considering for a finished basement on a sewered street: it closes if the street sewer backs up. We install them.
Water: Liberty Utilities New York's Merrick system.
EPA's service-area map puts essentially all residents on Liberty Utilities New York's Merrick system; your bill is the final word. Liberty's 2026 report on 2025 water says the Merrick system draws from 16 wells in the Magothy aquifer; caustic soda raises the pH and a phosphate compound limits corrosion. Total hardness was just 1.6 to 19.3 mg/L, which is very soft, and across the whole Merrick district Liberty's state inventory counts 28 lead and 524 galvanized service lines on the customer side. Soft, low-mineral water is why corrosion control matters for old copper and galvanized pipe. For a leak at the curb, call Liberty at 1-877-426-6999. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
North Wantagh is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department (One Washington Street, Hempstead).
