1655
year Bradley Vogel bought his North Bellmore farm
Source: Wikipedia, "Bellmore, New York"
Farmland that became "the Bellmores."
Wikipedia's history of Bellmore says Bradley Vogel bought a 214-acre farm in what is now North Bellmore in 1655, and the area grew from farming settlements into the suburb that, with Bellmore to the south, is called "the Bellmores." The state's 2014 Bellmore/Merrick recovery plan drew its northern line at Camp and Beltagh Avenues, with North Merrick and North Bellmore beyond it. Wellington C. Mepham High School, the oldest of the three Bellmore–Merrick high schools, opened on Camp Avenue in North Bellmore in 1937; its auditorium holds a 16-by-80-foot painted map of Long Island from the same year. North Bellmore has its own five-school elementary district and two North Bellmore Fire Department firehouses; the Bellmores' main roads include the Southern State Parkway, Jerusalem Avenue, Newbridge Road and Bellmore Avenue.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 6,700 homes, with a median year built of 1958. 40% went up in the 1950s and 24% in the 1960s; 11% are older than 1940, and 12% were built after 1980. 91% are single-family detached houses and 5% are two-family. 90% are owner-occupied.
So most houses here are 55 to 75 years old, roughly when original drain lines, galvanized supply pipe and cast-iron stacks start to fail. Several slow drains at once, a gurgling floor drain, low pressure, or rusty water from one tap are the signs to have it checked.
Oil heat, and the gas lines that replace it.
The ACS shows 50% of North Bellmore homes heat with utility gas and 44% with fuel oil, against 23% oil in Merrick. Every oil-to-gas switch needs a new gas line to the heating equipment, and it's the natural time to move the water heater, range and dryer to gas too. We do the gas line work and the gas water heater. We don't sell or deliver oil.
On the county sewer.
Nassau County's health department lists North Bellmore's sewers under the Nassau County Department of Public Works (516-571-6841). The county's Sewer District No. 3 runs from Freeport to the Suffolk line and drains to the Cedar Creek plant on the Wantagh–Seaford border. A backup that stops at your house is usually in your own line to the street; we clear it. If neighbors are backed up too, call the county.
Inland, but not immune to backups.
On FEMA's current flood maps, none of North Bellmore is in the high-risk (1% annual chance) flood zone; the Sandy tidal flooding the Herald described was in south Bellmore and south Merrick. Sewer backups are a different problem. If your basement is finished, a backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer line closes when the street sewer backs up, so sewage can't come in through floor drains. We install them.
Water: Liberty Utilities, Merrick system.
Liberty Utilities New York lists North Bellmore among the communities its Merrick Operations District serves. Its 2026 report on 2025 water says the district pumps from 16 wells in the Magothy aquifer for about 136,000 people, raises pH with caustic soda, and adds a phosphate compound to control corrosion and hold iron in solution; three wells have iron filters, one has carbon filters and one has advanced oxidation for 1,4-dioxane. The water is very soft (total hardness 1.6 to 19.3 mg/L), PFOA and PFOS were not detected, and 1,4-dioxane topped out at 0.38 micrograms per liter against a 1.0 limit. Liberty replaced 126 service lines in 2025, plans about 150 more in 2026, and asks owners to report service lines of unknown material. Your water bill shows who your supplier is. For a leak at the curb, call Liberty at 1-877-426-6999.
Permits and licensing: Town of Hempstead.
North Bellmore is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing and gas permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department (One Washington Street, Hempstead), which also handles plumber licensing.

Questions
North Bellmore plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of North Bellmore?
Yes, all of it (11710 and the North Bellmore part of 11566), plus neighboring Bellmore, North Merrick, Merrick, Wantagh, Levittown and East Meadow.
We're switching from oil to gas. What plumbing work is involved?
A gas line from the meter to the new heating equipment, sized for anything else you want on gas: water heater, range, dryer. Gas permits go through the Town of Hempstead. We do the gas piping and gas water heaters; we don't sell or deliver oil.
Am I in a flood zone?
Not on FEMA's current maps: none of the North Bellmore CDP is in the high-risk zone. Your lender or the FEMA flood map site can confirm for your exact lot.
Sewage came up through my basement floor drain. Who do I call?
If it's only your house, the blockage is usually in your line to the street: call us. If neighbors have it too, call Nassau County DPW at 516-571-6841. A backwater valve can keep it from happening again.
My house was built in the 1950s. Should I worry about the main drain?
Not worry, but check. A 65-year-old main may be cast iron or clay.
When can I reach you in North Bellmore?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
