Christian Hook, Oceanville, Oceanside.

Wikipedia's history says the English set up a township here called Christian Hook in 1674, and oysters became the main business. It was renamed Oceanville in 1864, then "OceanSide" in 1890 because New York already had an Oceanville, and "Oceanside" in 1918. The hamlet doesn't actually face the ocean; Reynolds Channel, marsh islands and the Long Beach barrier island sit between them. From the early 1900s to the late 1970s, Oceanside grew south by building over swamps and marshes, and the postwar boom filled it with houses. That low, filled ground is why parts of it flood.

The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 11,300 homes, with a median year built of 1956. 36% went up in the 1950s and 18% in the 1960s, and 19% are older than 1940. 85% are single-family detached, and 93% are owner-occupied. Heating is mostly gas: 67% utility gas, 22% fuel oil and 8% electric.

A 1950s house that has been dormered, extended or rebuilt usually has more fixtures on the main drain than it was built for. When several fixtures drain slowly at once, we clear the main before anyone talks about digging. For oil-to-gas switches, we run the gas piping. We don't sell or deliver oil.

Sandy and the flood-prone south side.

In 2012 Sandy flooded the southern part of Oceanside completely, with water reported as far north as Nathan's on Long Beach Road, according to Wikipedia. Power was out for nearly two weeks after a substation in Island Park exploded, and the 2016 blizzard flooded streets closest to the channel again. If your water heater, boiler or gas appliances ever sat in floodwater, have them checked before you relight them. Low-lying homes also tend to see more drain backups during storms and high tides. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer line closes when the street sewer backs up, so sewage can't come in through basement drains. We install them.

Sewer: Nassau County.

The Nassau County Department of Health lists Oceanside as publicly sewered, with Nassau County Public Works as the local sewer authority (516-571-6841). That plant, just west of Oceanside, was flooded with more than nine feet of water in Sandy. It is the plant behind the Bay Park Conveyance Project, which tunnels treated water from the plant two miles north to Sunrise Highway and on to the Cedar Creek ocean outfall instead of into Reynolds Channel. The two tunnel-boring machines were named by students at Oceanside School #8 and School #5. A backup in your house is usually your own line to the street.

Your water: Liberty Utilities, Lynbrook system.

Oceanside and Harbor Isle are served by Liberty Utilities New York (formerly New York American Water). Its 2026 report on 2025 water lists 20 well treatment sites across a 43-square-mile service area. Caustic soda or lime is added to raise pH and cut corrosion of household plumbing, iron is filtered out at 13 sites, and sodium silicate holds the rest in solution. PFOA tested from non-detect up to 11.5 parts per trillion in 2025; New York's limit is 10, judged on a running average, and the report lists no violation for it. The same report discloses two 2025 violations for silica levels outside the required corrosion-control range, which it says were not an emergency. For 2026 Liberty plans about 30,000 feet of new water main and a new iron removal plant. If you want filtration for a specific contaminant, we'll size it to that report.

Permits.

Oceanside is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing and gas permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department (One Washington Street, Hempstead), which also handles plumber licensing.

Questions

Oceanside plumbing FAQ

Do you cover all of Oceanside?
Yes, all of ZIP 11572, plus Harbor Isle and Point Lookout, and neighboring Baldwin, East Rockaway, Island Park and Rockville Centre.
My basement drain backs up during big storms. Why?
In low-lying areas, heavy rain and high tides load the sewers, and a partly blocked house line makes it worse. We clear your line first. If the county main is backed up, call Nassau County Public Works at 516-571-6841. If it keeps happening, a backwater (sewer check) valve on your house line closes when the street sewer is overloaded, so sewage can't flow back in. We install them.
My house flooded. Is my water heater safe to use?
Not until it's checked. Saltwater damages burners, controls and gas valves. Shut it off and have it inspected or replaced before relighting it.
Is Oceanside tap water safe? Should I filter it?
Liberty's report lists no violations of drinking water standards for 2025, apart from the silica treatment notice. If you're concerned about PFAS or iron staining, a filter certified for that contaminant can help. We'll install it, and we won't oversell it.
There's water bubbling up at the curb. Who do I call?
Liberty Utilities at 1-877-426-6999 for its side of the meter. Call us for your side or inside the house.
When can I reach you in Oceanside?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
