Hick's Neck, Milburn, Baldwinsville, Baldwin.
Wikipedia's history says English settlers called the area Hick's Neck from 1643, then Milburn. In 1855 it became Baldwinsville, after merchant Thomas Baldwin, whose store stood near Merrick Road and Grand Avenue, and the railroad arrived in 1867. By 1939, ten years after Sunrise Highway opened, Baldwin was the largest unincorporated village in New York State. The area south of Atlantic Avenue is Baldwin Harbor, which shares Baldwin's ZIP code.
That early growth shows in the Census numbers. The Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 11,200 homes, with a median year built of 1949, the oldest of any town page in this series so far. 33% were built before 1940, 19% in the 1940s and 23% in the 1950s. Only 8% went up after 1980. 86% are single-family detached and 87% are owner-occupied.
In a house that old, the plumbing is often a mix of original and replaced pipe, sometimes galvanized supply lines next to copper and an old cast-iron or clay main drain. We check what you actually have before recommending any replacement.
Mostly gas.
The ACS shows 66% of Baldwin homes heat with utility gas and 25% with fuel oil. National Grid supplies gas in Baldwin. We install and repair the gas piping for water heaters, ranges, dryers and oil-to-gas switches. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Sandy, and the sewage that came with it.
The state's NY Rising plan for Baldwin and Baldwin Harbor says more than 2,500 housing units were damaged by Sandy in October 2012. 1,270 were damaged to more than half their value. Floodwater topped four feet in about 300 units and reached one to four feet in nearly 900. Surge water reached as far north as Sunrise Highway, coming in south of Atlantic Avenue and up the canals of Parsonage Cove and Baldwin Bay. The county's Bay Park sewage plant flooded and went offline for more than 50 hours, a 48-inch force main burst under Barnes Avenue, and sewage backed up through manholes and basement drains into homes. Afterward the Town of Hempstead waived plumbing and building permit fees for in-kind rebuilding through March 2014.
If your water heater or gas appliances ever sat in floodwater, have them checked before you relight them. A backwater (sewer check) valve on your house sewer line closes when the street sewer backs up, so sewage can't flow back in through basement floor drains. We install them.
Sewer, not cesspool.
The Nassau County Department of Health lists Baldwin as publicly sewered, with Nassau County Public Works as the local sewer authority (516-571-6841). The NY Rising plan places Baldwin's sewers in the Bay Park district, now the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility. A backup is usually your house line to the street. If the county's main is backed up, call the county.
Your water: Liberty Utilities (formerly New York American Water).
Baldwin and Baldwin Harbor are on Liberty's Lynbrook system. Its 2026 report on 2025 water says the system serves about 227,700 people through 723 miles of mains, from wells about 500 feet deep in four aquifers. Caustic soda or lime is added to cut corrosion of household plumbing, iron is filtered out at 13 of its 20 treatment sites, and sodium silicate holds the rest of the iron in solution. Total hardness ran 4.2 to 58.6 mg/L, so the water is soft. The report says Liberty has found some lead and galvanized service lines in its inventory and plans to replace about 200 service lines in 2026.
Permits.
Baldwin is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing and gas permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department (One Washington Street, Hempstead), which also handles plumber licensing.

Questions
Baldwin plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of Baldwin?
Yes, all of ZIP 11510, including Baldwin Harbor south of Atlantic Avenue, plus neighboring Freeport, Oceanside, Rockville Centre and South Hempstead.
Sewage came up through my basement floor drain. Who do I call?
If it's only your house, the blockage is usually in your line to the street: call us. If neighbors have it too, the county main may be backed up: call Nassau County Public Works at 516-571-6841.
Can a backwater valve keep sewage out of my basement?
That's what it's for. A backwater (sewer check) valve goes on your house sewer line and closes when the street sewer backs up, so sewage can't flow back in through floor drains and low fixtures. It has to be kept clear and checked from time to time to keep working. We install them. Call (631) 644-2084.
My house is from the 1920s. Should I worry about the pipes?
Not automatically. Low pressure, rusty water or repeat clogs are the signs to check.
My house flooded in Sandy. What should I check?
Any water heater, boiler or gas appliance that sat in floodwater, plus the floor drains and main line. If the house was rebuilt and raised, much of the plumbing may be new; if not, it's worth a look.
There's water bubbling up at the curb. Who do I call?
Liberty Utilities at 1-877-426-6999 for its side of the meter. Call us for your side or inside the house.
When can I reach you in Baldwin?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
