Named for an English plain.
Wikipedia says Salisbury sits on a broad, flat stretch of the Hempstead Plains that reminded late-19th-century Long Islanders of Salisbury Plain in England, home of Stonehenge; the name replaced the older South Westbury as the official Census name in 1990. Many Levitt-style homes sit next to Eisenhower Park, which was once called Salisbury Park. The CDP covers 1.7 square miles at about 108 feet above sea level.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 4,300 homes, with a median year built of 1955. 60% went up in the 1950s, 2% before 1940, and 7% after 1980. 84% are single-family detached houses, and 91% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 71 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Oil to gas means new gas piping.
The ACS shows 28% of homes heat with utility gas and 55% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Sewer.
Nassau County's health department list of sewer collection districts doesn't name Salisbury separately; its neighbors East Meadow and Westbury are both listed under the Nassau County Department of Public Works (516-571-6841). A sewer district charge on your tax bill means you're connected. A backup that stops at your house is usually in your own line to the street; we clear it and repair or replace the line. If neighbors are backed up too, call the county at 516-571-6841.
Little mapped flood risk.
FEMA's current flood map puts none of Salisbury in the high-risk flood zone. A backwater (sewer check) valve is still worth considering for a finished basement on a sewered street: it closes if the street sewer backs up. We install them.
Water: Town of Hempstead Water Department (East Meadow Water District system).
EPA's service-area map puts about 74% of residents, with about 25% on the Hicksville Water District and a sliver on the Westbury Water District on the Town of Hempstead Water Department (East Meadow Water District system); your bill is the final word. In EPA's UCMR 5 testing, the main supplier reported no PFOA or PFOS. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
Salisbury is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department (One Washington Street, Hempstead).
Local reference points: Eisenhower Park and the Westbury LIRR station.
