Local to East Meadow

Based on Merrick Road, serving East Meadow

East Meadow is a 1950s town. More than half its houses were built in that one decade, and most still heat with oil. That means a lot of 70-year-old drain lines and a lot of oil-to-gas conversions. From our Massapequa office it's about 18 minutes away without traffic.

More than half the houses date from the 1950s.

East Meadow was farmland and grazing meadow on the Hempstead Plains for three centuries. Wikipedia's hamlet history says almost no actual meadow is left because of the post-World War II building boom. The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 12,200 homes. 54% were built in the 1950s alone, the highest single-decade share of any town page in this series, and the median year built is 1957. Only 3% are older than 1940. 81% are single-family detached and 89% are owner-occupied.

A house built in 1955 is now about 70 years old. Original cast-iron drain lines and clay or cast-iron house sewers from that era crack, rust through or let roots in. When more than one fixture drains slowly, or the basement floor drain backs up, the main line is the first suspect. We clear it before talking about repair or replacement.

Half of East Meadow still heats with oil.

The ACS shows 53% of homes heat with fuel oil and 35% with utility gas. That is the second-highest oil share in this series, after Levittown. If your hot water comes off the oil boiler, a gas conversion can also mean a new water heater, plus new gas piping to the equipment, range and dryer. We do the gas line and water heater work. We don't sell or deliver oil.

Your water: the East Meadow Water District.

Most of East Meadow gets its water from the East Meadow Water District, run by the Town of Hempstead Department of Water from its office at 1995 Prospect Avenue in East Meadow. The district was established on March 2, 1949 and has seven operating wells. The town's 2025 report covers it together with the Bowling Green Estates, Levittown, Roosevelt Field and Uniondale districts: 29 wells in the Magothy aquifer, 487 to 741 feet deep. The pumped water is naturally acidic, so the town adds lime to cut corrosion, and a polyphosphate at three sites to prevent rusty water. Nitrate is at or above the limit in five of the 29 source wells, so those are blended or treated by ion exchange before the water reaches the system. Testing also found 1,4-dioxane above New York's 1 part-per-billion limit; the town has a state deferral while it builds treatment. For 2026, the town plans a new elevated tank at the East Meadow Site II facility and water main replacement in East Meadow. If you want home filtration on top of that, we'll size it to the report.

Sewer, not cesspool.

East Meadow is on Nassau County's public sewer system. A backup here is usually your house line to the street, not a full cesspool.

Permits.

East Meadow is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing and gas permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department, not a village.

Questions

East Meadow plumbing FAQ

Do you cover all of East Meadow?
Yes, all of ZIP 11554, including Barnum Woods and the streets around Eisenhower Park, plus neighboring Salisbury, Uniondale, North Merrick and North Bellmore.
My house was built in the 1950s. Is the main drain original?
It may be. 54% of East Meadow homes went up in the 1950s. If drains are slow in more than one fixture or the main backs up, have it cleared.
We're converting from oil to gas. What plumbing do we need?
New gas piping to the new heating equipment, and often to the range and dryer. If your hot water came off the oil boiler, you'll also need a separate water heater. We do both.
Is East Meadow tap water safe? Should I filter it?
The Town of Hempstead's 2025 report says the districts are operating under a state deferral for 1,4-dioxane while treatment is built, and it treats or blends wells for nitrate. If you want extra protection, a filter matched to the report can help. We'll show you what it removes.
There's water bubbling up at the curb. Who do I call?
For the street or the district's side of the meter, call the Town of Hempstead Department of Water at (516) 794-8300. If the leak is on your side of the meter or inside the house, call us.
When can I reach you in East Meadow?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
