Based on Merrick Road, serving Merrick
Merrick is a South Shore hamlet of single-family homes, most of them from the 1950s and 1960s, on the county sewer, with canal neighborhoods along Merrick and East Bays. Sandy pushed bay water into its streets and, the state's recovery plan says, sewage into homes. From our Massapequa office it's about 13 minutes away without traffic.

Filled marsh, canals and the bay.
The state's NY Rising plan for Bellmore and Merrick (2014) describes two hamlets of upland and waterfront single-family neighborhoods along Merrick and East Bays, built on peninsulas and canals. Over half of the homes went up in the 1950s and 1960s, many on land made by filling the fingers of marsh that reached into the bay, which is why the southern streets have always been exposed to surge and tidal flooding. Merrick's downtown runs along Merrick Avenue near the Merrick LIRR station on the Babylon Branch. The Census Bureau puts the hamlet at 5.2 square miles, about a fifth of it water.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 7,400 homes, with a median year built of 1956. 32% went up in the 1950s and 21% in the 1960s; 20% are older than 1940, and only 10% were built after 1980. 96% are single-family detached houses, and 97% are owner-occupied.
So most main drains and supply lines here are 55 to 75 years old, and in the oldest houses they may be original cast iron, clay or galvanized steel. Several slow drains at once, a gurgling floor drain, or rusty water from one tap are the signs to have it checked before it becomes a backup.
Heating fuel.
The ACS shows 72% of Merrick homes heat with utility gas and 23% with fuel oil. Switching from oil to gas means new gas piping to the equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
On the county sewer.
Nassau County's health department lists Merrick's sewers under the Nassau County Department of Public Works (516-571-6841). The NY Rising plan calls for sewer upgrades "to prevent future backup" and for upgrades at the county's Cedar Creek treatment plant, and notes two county sewage pump stations in the hamlets' high-risk flood zones. A backup that stops at your house is usually in your own line to the street; we clear it. If neighbors are backed up too, call the county.
Sandy, surge and sewage.
The NY Rising plan says Sandy's surge topped ten feet at high tide in October 2012 and inundated waterfront neighborhoods that sit five to ten feet above sea level; more than 3,000 housing units in Bellmore and Merrick were reported damaged, many with several feet of water inside. It also says sanitary sewer systems "caused extensive damage to residences" during Sandy, with "significant sewage backup in homes." The Herald reported that the surge forced saltwater up through storm drains onto streets such as George and Helen courts in south Merrick, and that the town has since raised roads and added check valves on storm-drain outfalls. On FEMA's current flood maps, roughly half of the Merrick CDP's area, including its bay and marsh, is in the high-risk (1% annual chance) flood zone; the 2014 plan put most of the high-risk neighborhoods south of Sunrise Highway, plus Merokee Pond and parts of the Meadowbrook corridor. Because Merrick is sewered, a backwater (sewer check) valve on your house sewer line can keep a street-sewer backup from coming in through basement floor drains. We install them. If your water heater, boiler or gas appliances ever sat in salt water, have them checked before relighting.
Water: Liberty Utilities, Merrick system.
Merrick and North Merrick are served by Liberty Utilities New York's Merrick Operations District. Its 2026 report on 2025 water says it serves about 136,000 people from 16 wells in the Magothy aquifer. Caustic soda raises the pH, a phosphate compound (Calciquest) limits corrosion of plumbing and holds iron in solution, three wells have iron filters, one has carbon filters for a Navy/Northrop Grumman plume, and one has advanced oxidation for 1,4-dioxane. Total hardness ran just 1.6 to 19.3 mg/L, which is very soft, and the report lists PFOA and PFOS as not detected and 1,4-dioxane at no more than 0.38 micrograms per liter against a 1.0 limit. Liberty's service line inventory shows 28 lead lines and 524 galvanized lines on the customer side across the district, and it asks owners to report unknown lines. Soft, low-mineral water like this is part of why corrosion control matters for old copper and galvanized pipe. For a leak at the curb, call Liberty at 1-877-426-6999.
Permits and licensing: Town of Hempstead.
Merrick is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing and gas permits go through the Town of Hempstead Building Department (One Washington Street, Hempstead), which also handles plumber licensing.

Questions
Merrick plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of Merrick?
Yes, both ZIPs (11566 and the Merrick part of 11520), north and south of Sunrise Highway, plus neighboring North Merrick, Bellmore, North Bellmore and Freeport.
Sewage came up through my basement floor drain. Who do I call?
If it's only your house, the blockage is usually in your line to the street: call us. If neighbors have it too, the county sewer may be backed up: call Nassau County DPW at 516-571-6841.
Can a backwater valve keep sewage out of my basement?
That's what it's for. A backwater (sewer check) valve goes on your house sewer line and closes when the street sewer backs up, so sewage can't flow back in through floor drains and low fixtures. It has to be kept clear and checked from time to time to keep working. We install them. Call (631) 644-2084.
My house flooded in Sandy. What should I check?
Any water heater, boiler or gas appliance that sat in floodwater, plus the floor drains and main line. If the house was rebuilt or raised, much of the plumbing may be new; if not, it's worth a look.
Is Merrick's water hard?
No. Liberty's 2025 data shows total hardness of 1.6 to 19.3 mg/L, which is very soft. If you see blue-green stains or have pinhole leaks in copper, call us to check the piping.
When can I reach you in Merrick?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
