Walt Whitman's birthplace and Long Island's first enclosed mall.
Wikipedia says South Huntington is the birthplace of Walt Whitman, and that the Walt Whitman Shopping Center, which opened in 1962, was the first enclosed shopping center on Long Island. Homes here carry a Huntington Station mailing address (ZIP 11746). The CDP covers 3.4 square miles, all land.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 3,500 homes, with a median year built of 1958. 46% went up in the 1950s, 5% before 1940, and 13% after 1980. 89% are single-family detached houses, and 89% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 68 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Oil to gas means new gas piping.
The ACS shows 36% of homes heat with utility gas and 58% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
Cesspools and septic, mostly.
Laying Suffolk County's sewer-district map over the Census boundary puts only small pieces of South Huntington in a county sewer district: the Walt Whitman Mall Sewer District (about 3%), roughly 3% of the area in all. Most homes rely on cesspools or septic systems. We clear the line from the house to the system, but a full or failing cesspool is a job for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work, and we don't install septic systems.
Little mapped flood risk.
FEMA's current flood map puts none of South Huntington in the high-risk flood zone.
Water: South Huntington Water District.
EPA's service-area map puts about 96% of residents, with small edges on the Greenlawn and Dix Hills water districts on the South Huntington Water District; your bill is the final word. In EPA's UCMR 5 testing, the main supplier reported no PFOA or PFOS. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
South Huntington is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Huntington.
