A railroad stop that moved.
Wikipedia says the area was home to the Matinecock before Dutch and English settlers arrived in the 17th century; the Long Island Rail Road reached it in 1868, and a Woodbury station opened in 1875 but closed around 1901–1902, replaced by the Cold Spring Harbor station just east of the county line. Woodbury is part of Greater Syosset, uses ZIP 11797, and borders Laurel Hollow, Plainview, Syosset, Cold Spring Harbor, West Hills and South Huntington. The CDP covers 5.0 square miles.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 3,200 homes, with a median year built of 1980. 14% went up in the 1950s, 5% before 1940, and 50% after 1980. 55% are single-family detached houses, 18% are in buildings of five or more units, and 87% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 46 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Oil to gas means new gas piping.
The ACS shows 55% of homes heat with utility gas and 26% with fuel oil. Switching means properly sized gas piping to the new equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
On the sewer.
Nassau County's health department lists Woodbury's sewers under the Nassau County Department of Public Works (516-571-6841). A backup that stops at your house is usually in your own line to the street; we clear it and repair or replace the line. If neighbors are backed up too, call the county at 516-571-6841.
Little mapped flood risk.
FEMA's current flood map puts none of Woodbury in the high-risk flood zone. A backwater (sewer check) valve is still worth considering for a finished basement on a sewered street: it closes if the street sewer backs up. We install them.
Water: Woodbury Water District.
EPA's service-area map puts about 95% of residents, with two small private systems (Amdur Park and Country Crossing) serving the rest on the Woodbury Water District; your bill is the final word. Its most recent lead 90th-percentile result was 8.5 ppb, under the 15 ppb action level. In EPA's UCMR 5 testing, the main supplier reported no PFOA or PFOS. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call your water supplier. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
Woodbury is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Planning and Development.
