Based on Merrick Road, serving Deer Park
Deer Park is a hamlet of 1950s and 1960s houses in the northeast corner of the Town of Babylon. Almost none of it is on a public sewer today, so a slow main drain usually leads to the question "line or cesspool?" From our Massapequa office it's about 19 minutes away without traffic.

From farms and dahlias to subdivisions.
Wikipedia's history says Charles Wilson started a large farm here in 1853, about eleven years after the Long Island Rail Road arrived, and the area was known for fruit and dahlia growing until the post-war building boom. Edgewood State Hospital operated here from 1938 to 1969, the Deer Park Airport from 1946 to 1974, and Tanger Outlets at the Arches opened in 2008. The Deer Park LIRR station has mostly sat in neighboring Baywood and Brentwood since 1987.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 9,300 homes, with a median year built of 1964. 30% went up in the 1950s and 31% in the 1960s; only 4% are older than 1940 and 16% were built after 1980. 80% are single-family detached and 84% are owner-occupied.
That means a lot of original drain lines that are now 55 to 75 years old, many running to cesspools of the same age. When every drain in the house slows at once, it can be roots or a break in the line, or a cesspool that no longer takes water. We clear the line before anyone talks about digging. If it's the cesspool itself, you'll need a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work.
Heating fuel.
The ACS shows 59% of Deer Park homes heat with utility gas, 25% with fuel oil and 12% with electricity. Switching from oil to gas means new gas piping to the equipment, and often to the water heater, range and dryer. We do the gas line work. We don't sell or deliver oil.
No sewer yet for most of Deer Park.
The Southwest Sewer District (No. 3) covers much of the Towns of Babylon and Islip, but Deer Park was one of five communities in the county's 2012 study of areas that still lacked sewers. Laying the county's current sewer-district map over the Census boundary, no part of the Deer Park hamlet is inside the active district today. The county's Subwatersheds Wastewater Implementation Plan (2025) lists "Phase 1 – Deer Park Corridors" (CP 8526-1): sewers along Bay Shore Road, Commack Road, Deer Park Avenue and Long Island Avenue, an estimated $60.7 million, with an estimated design start of April 2025 and construction completion of September 2029. A second phase (CP 8526-2, about $70.2 million) for the surrounding Deer Park areas has no dates yet. The Town of Babylon calls the downtown sewer "the longest-term component" of its Deer Park revitalization and is drafting a Route 231 zoning overlay ahead of it.
When a sewer does reach your street, we do the hookup: the new line from the house to the street connection. If the new sewers connect into Sewer District No. 3, Town of Babylon code waives the separate town plumbing permit for the connection; the county's connection application (with a town information form) is used instead. Abandoning the old cesspool is cesspool work, which we don't do, so plan on a separate contractor for that part. Since July 1, 2019, Suffolk County hasn't allowed a failed cesspool to be replaced with another cesspool.
Water: Suffolk County Water Authority, two areas.
SCWA's index puts most of Deer Park north of the LIRR (and some areas south of it, east of Carll's Path) in Distribution Area 12, and the rest south of the tracks in Area 1. SCWA's 2026 report on 2025 water shows iron above New York's 300 microgram standard in some samples in both areas: Area 12 up to 850 (average 88) and Area 1 up to 963 (average 218). Average hardness was about 73 mg/L in Area 12 and 37 in Area 1, both on the soft side. Nitrate stayed under the 10 mg/L limit, with Area 12 averaging 4.25. SCWA says it adds polyphosphates to keep iron in solution. If you see orange stains, an iron filter sized to your area's numbers can help. For a leak at the street, call SCWA at (631) 698-9500.
Permits and licensing: Town of Babylon.
Deer Park is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Babylon's Division of Building. Under town code, plumbing, drainage and gas piping work must be done by a master plumber licensed by the Town of Babylon Plumbers Examining Board, and gas permits are issued only to those licensed plumbers.

Questions
Deer Park plumbing FAQ
Do you cover all of Deer Park?
Yes, all of ZIP 11729, north and south of the tracks, plus neighboring North Babylon, Wheatley Heights, Wyandanch, Baywood and Dix Hills.
Is my house on a sewer or a cesspool?
Almost certainly a cesspool or septic system today. Check your tax bill for a sewer district charge, or ask Suffolk County DPW.
My drains back up and I'm on a cesspool. Can you help?
We can clear the house's main drain. If it's clear and water still won't go down, the cesspool itself is likely full or failing, and that's a job for a cesspool or septic contractor. We don't do cesspool work or install septic systems.
When will sewers come to Deer Park, and can you connect me?
The county's plan starts with the main corridors (Deer Park Avenue, Long Island Avenue, Commack Road, Bay Shore Road), with construction estimated to finish in 2029. When your street is ready, we can do the house connection. The old cesspool has to be abandoned by a separate contractor.
Why are my fixtures and laundry getting orange stains?
Usually iron. SCWA's own report shows iron above the state standard in some samples in both areas that serve Deer Park. A properly sized iron filter can cut the staining.
When can I reach you in Deer Park?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
