A hamlet that absorbed East Garden City.

Uniondale's first one-room schoolhouse was built in 1830 on what is now the site of the Uniondale Public Library, according to Wikipedia. Hofstra University started in 1935 on the William S. Hofstra estate. In the early 1970s some residents tried to incorporate as a village over the redevelopment of Mitchel Field; it failed, so Uniondale is still an unincorporated hamlet run by the Town of Hempstead. Until 2015 the area north of Hempstead Turnpike was a separate Census place called East Garden City. It is now part of Uniondale, which is why the hamlet includes the Coliseum, where the Islanders played until 2021, and the office plazas around it.

That split shows in the Census numbers. The Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 9,200 homes, with a median year built of 1956. 22% were built in the 1940s and 28% in the 1950s. But 21% went up in 2000 or later. 70% are single-family detached, 6% are townhouses (single-family attached), and 17% are in buildings with 10 or more units. 70% are owner-occupied.

So the work differs by street. In a 1940s or 1950s house, the main drain to the street may be original, and a dormer bath or finished basement adds load to it. When more than one fixture drains slowly, we clear the main before anyone talks about digging. In a newer townhouse or apartment, the water heater and supply lines often sit in a closet next to finished rooms, so a slow leak can do damage before anyone sees it.

Mostly gas.

The ACS shows 64% of Uniondale homes heat with utility gas, 22% with fuel oil and 12% with electricity. We install and repair gas piping for water heaters, ranges, dryers and oil-to-gas switches. We don't sell or deliver oil.

Your water: the Uniondale Water District, run by the Town.

Most of Uniondale is in the Uniondale Water District, established July 3, 1933 and run by the Town of Hempstead Department of Water. The Town's 2025 report covers it together with the Bowling Green Estates, East Meadow, Levittown and Roosevelt Field districts. Uniondale has six operating wells; all 29 wells in the combined system draw from the Magothy aquifer, 487 to 741 feet deep. The pumped water is naturally acidic, so the town adds lime to cut corrosion of mains and household plumbing. Nitrate is at or above the limit in five of the 29 source wells, so those are blended or treated by ion exchange before the water reaches the system. The report also says testing found 1,4-dioxane above New York's 1 part-per-billion limit; the town operates under a state deferral and has built advanced oxidation treatment on 18 wells, with more under way. If you want home filtration on top of that, we'll size it to the report, not to a sales pitch.

Sewer, not cesspool.

The Nassau County Department of Health lists Uniondale as publicly sewered, with Nassau County Public Works as the local sewer authority (516-571-6841). A backup is usually your house line to the street.

Permits.

As an unincorporated hamlet, Uniondale gets its plumbing and gas permits from the Town of Hempstead Building Department (One Washington Street, Hempstead), which also handles plumber licensing.

Questions

Uniondale plumbing FAQ

Do you cover all of Uniondale?
Yes, all of ZIP 11553 and the Uniondale parts of 11530 and 11590, north and south of Hempstead Turnpike, plus neighboring Hempstead, East Meadow, Roosevelt and Garden City.
I live in a townhouse or apartment. Who fixes a leak, me or the building?
Generally, plumbing that serves only your unit is yours; shared risers and mains belong to the association or landlord. Check your HOA rules or lease. If water is coming through a ceiling, shut off your unit's valve and call us; we'll find the source.
Is Uniondale tap water safe? Should I filter it?
The Town's report says testing found 1,4-dioxane above the state limit and that it is building treatment under a state deferral. A filter certified for the specific contaminant you care about can help. We'll install it and we won't oversell it.
There's water bubbling up at the curb. Who do I call?
Your water district for its side of the meter: for the Town of Hempstead Department of Water, (516) 794-8300. Call us for your side or inside the house.
My older house drains slowly everywhere. What's wrong?
Usually a partial blockage in the main drain, often roots or buildup in an original line. We clear it.
When can I reach you in Uniondale?
We answer calls 24/7. We're open Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Call (631) 644-2084.
